Bullet Hypers – A Great Speed Development Exercise

I wanted to introduce an exercise we use as part of our speed development program called Bullet Hypers. It is a movement that we use to teach powerful “on & off” switching of the antagonistic muscles of mainly the quads and the hams. The ability to turn the muscles on and off instantaneously and maximally is the key to advanced speed development. Any hesitation in that “switch” tends to not only make the athlete slower but could actually go as far as “putting the brakes on” and decelerate the athlete’s stride and overall sprinting speed. This exercise is a safe and effective way to train the nervous system to control the muscles in that manner and to that high degree of turnover. Now, I will advise that this is an advanced movement and we are lucky to own a Poor Man’s Hyperextension made by Sorinex Equipment Co. This specialized piece of equipment would be hard to duplicate with a regular glute ham but I have seen it done. It’s just that there is no safety net if the athlete fails to recoil with enough force to keep them from angling down to the floor. The athlete here is a Junior in college with about 10 years of strength training under his belt. And you can see that even he is having somewhat of a tough time with the exercise. Make sure that whatever apparatus you are using, that it is firmly anchored because the forces generated by this movement can be extremely high and will scoot the equipment around and might destabilize the athlete enough to possibly render an injury. Give it a try after sufficient warm up and movement prep and leave us a comment on your results. Thanks,
Jeff
